Foreglow/Affirmations in your own voice on iPhone
How to make affirmations in your own voice on iPhone.
Most affirmation apps hand you a stranger's voice reading sentences written for everyone. The alternative takes about fifteen minutes: write five lines that are true of your own life, record them once, and keep the file. This page gives the no-app method first, then what Foreglow adds if you want the note to know your details.

Write five short lines in the first person about one specific change, open Voice Memos, record them in a quiet room with the phone a hand's width from your mouth, trim the ends, rename the memo, and play it back at one fixed moment in your day. No Foreglow subscription is required. If Voice Memos is enabled in iCloud, Apple saves and syncs your recordings through iCloud; check your settings before recording something private.
Step 1: write lines you would not be embarrassed to hear back
The reason most people stop listening to affirmations is not the voice. It is that the sentences are not about them. "I am abundant" is a slogan; your own voice reading a slogan sounds like an advert. A line worth hearing names one concrete thing and one behaviour you actually do.
Take one area, and write five lines that pass two tests: you could point to the thing in your real life, and the line does not depend on luck, another person's decision or a medical result.
| Generic affirmation | Specific line for the recording |
|---|---|
| I am confident at work. | I say the number I want in the first meeting, before anyone asks me to justify it. |
| I am healthy and full of energy. | My shoes are by the door, and the ten-minute walk happens before I check email. |
| I attract abundance. | I moved the savings transfer to the first of the month, and I do not undo it on the twentieth. |
| I am at peace. | When the message comes in at 11pm, I read it in the morning. |
| I am becoming my best self. | I finished the draft badly on purpose, because a finished bad draft is what I can fix on Tuesday. |
Write in the present tense if it feels true today, and in the past tense if it does not yet. "I kept the walk going through a bad week" is easier to say out loud than "I always walk", because the first one is a memory you can imagine having and the second is a claim you can hear yourself doubting.
Step 2: record it with Voice Memos, no app needed
- Open Voice Memos and tap the red record button. Hold the phone about a hand's width from your mouth, in a room without a fan or an open window.
- Read the five lines once, slowly. Leave a breath between them. A single take of 60 to 90 seconds is enough; a polished performance is not the goal.
- Trim the silence if you want. Use Voice Memos' editing controls to shorten the ends, keeping a second of quiet on each side. Trimming is optional.
- Rename it with the topic and the date, so "New Recording 14" does not swallow it. Tap the name to edit it.
- Play it once in Voice Memos. Tap the recording, then Play. Play it again manually if you want another listen. This method does not require an automatic loop; exporting a file does not by itself add a Repeat One control.
This method needs no Foreglow account or upload to Foreglow. It is not a promise that nothing leaves your phone: Apple explains that Voice Memos saves recordings in iCloud when that setting is enabled. Review your iCloud and backup settings for your own privacy requirements.
Step 3: what Foreglow adds, and what it does not
Foreglow is the product version of the exercise above, for people who want the note written around the specific details of their life and spoken in a voice they chose. Three parts are different from the Voice Memos route:
- The writing is done from your answers. You answer a few questions: your name, the things you are moving toward, a handful of details only you would know. The app writes a short note from them, addressed to you from a later point in your life, in the past tense. If it gets a detail wrong, you hold that line and say what is true, and later notes stop repeating the mistake.
- The voice is a choice with three routes. Five prepared voices; your own voice, read aloud once into the app; or a private model of your voice. The model route needs explicit, spoken consent first. The consent screen says exactly this: "I consent to creating an AI copy of my own voice for my own use in Foreglow." The recording instruction is equally plain: "Quiet room. Keep the phone a handspan away. Read the consent phrase first, then continue for 60–90 seconds." You can delete the model at any time and the app tells you what that deletes.
- The file is still yours. Every saved note can be exported through the iPhone share sheet as an ordinary audio file, to Files, to a message, or anywhere else. Notes you have already made keep playing after a subscription ends, and the first note is free permanently.
Does recording your own voice in Foreglow send it to a server?
Building or using a voice model does, and so does writing the note and turning its text into speech; those are the three server-side steps. The library itself — saved notes, finished audio, your answers, your board — stays on the phone, and nothing is sent that a generation you asked for does not need. The privacy page lists each provider and purpose.
Should affirmations be in your own voice or an AI voice?
Your own recorded voice is the right default when privacy, familiarity and cost matter most: it is free, it needs no consent flow, and hearing yourself say a specific sentence is oddly harder to dismiss than hearing a narrator say it. An AI voice, including a model of your own, is worth it when you want to change the words often without re-recording, or when you dislike the sound of your recorded voice enough that you would never replay it. Only use a service that shows you the consent text, says what is stored, and lets you delete the model.
An illustrative script
This fictional example imagines someone rebuilding a morning after a house move. It demonstrates specific details and a small next action; it is not a customer story or a timed recording.
"Priya, the kettle goes on before the phone comes off the charger. The boxes in the hall are gone, not because the flat is finished but because you gave yourself one box a night for a fortnight. You walk to the bakery on the corner on Saturdays and you know the woman's name now. The commute is still forty minutes; you stopped treating that as the problem and started using it for the audiobook. Tonight: unpack the kitchen drawer, the one with the tape still on it."
Illustrative script. Priya is a fictional person.
Notice what it does not do. It does not promise the flat will feel like home by a date. It does not say the job will improve. It names five things Priya can point to and ends with one she can do before bed.
Limits worth stating plainly
- This is a reflection tool, not a treatment. Listening to a recording, in any voice, has no demonstrated effect on outcomes in your life, and neither this page nor Foreglow claims one. If you are dealing with low mood, anxiety or sleep problems, a qualified professional is the right first stop.
- A voice model is a serious thing to make. Do not make one with any service that skips consent, hides what it stores, or will not let you delete it. Do not record anyone else's voice.
- Specific lines go stale. When a line stops being true, or starts to feel like pressure rather than description, rewrite it or drop it. A recording you avoid is not doing anything for you.
- Foreglow is iPhone-only. Voice Memos controls can differ by iOS version. This guide follows Apple's recording instructions; it is not a claim of hands-on testing on every version.
Can you do this without Foreglow?
Yes, and the first half of this page is that method. Use a notes app to write the five lines and Voice Memos to record them. Foreglow is for the people who want the note written from their own details, a choice of voice including a consented model of their own, corrections that stick, offline replay, a night loop, and a paired vision board — and who want the audio exported as an ordinary file they own.
