Are these actually free?

Yes, and there is no account, no email, no export limit and no watermark unless you tick the box to add one. The backgrounds are generated by the tool from our own colour system, so nothing you make carries a licence.

Do the photos you add get uploaded?

No. Images are decoded, resized and drawn entirely in your browser, and the PNG is written on your device. Open your network tab and add a photo — nothing leaves.

Why not just use Canva?

You can, and for a printed board or a desktop collage it is the better tool. What it does not do is compose for a phone lock screen: the clock band, the widget row and the torch and camera corners are not in its templates, so a face or a word ends up behind one of them.

This is a much smaller tool that does one thing. If you need layers, brand kits and a team, use Canva.
